About the Position:

The University Police Department is dedicated to ensuring the University Community's right to a crime-free environment through exemplary and professional service. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Police Officer Cadet - Non-Represented. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Police Officer Cadet - Non-Represented is a non-sworn officer in a trainee capacity. Attends a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Upon successful completion of the required P.O.S.T. training within the required timeframe and at the discretion of management, will be appointed to the classification of Police Officer on a probationary basis.

Attends the prescribed training sessions to learn the principles, practices, and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement, as well as codified and case law. Receives training in report writing, physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, arrest and control techniques, de-escalation techniques, community policing strategies, as well as other law enforcement-related skills. Under close supervision, assists other police officers in the performance of their duties.

Upon successful completion of the required POST training (police academy) within the required time frame and at the discretion of management, the Police Officer Cadet will be appointed to the classification of Police Officer. Works varied shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and special events. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
High school diploma or the equivalent and eligibility to attend a certified P.O.S.T. basic training academy. Ability to qualify for and satisfactorily meet the ongoing standards of the basic P.O.S.T. academy training. Possession of the mental capacity, physical agility, and learning potential to perform all aspects of P.O.S.T. training and police work.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university in criminal justice or a related field. Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures, current criminal codes and laws. Ability to make competent decisions and function effectively with members of the University. Possesses effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations. Must possess effective oral and written communication skills, including ability to write clear and comprehensive reports. Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.

Must maintain certification mandated by law. Must pass a written and/or oral examination, medical examination, physical agility test, psychological examination, drug test, and a background check including fingerprinting. The incumbent must have no felony convictions and must possess or be able to complete CPR and First Aid certification.
