Security Service Assistant 1

Required Qualifications:
As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Must have taken and passed the specific job-related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. The Civil Service list for this position might provide insufficient acceptors, therefore, a provisional appointment will be made. Any provisional appointee will be required to take, pass and be reachable on the next Security Services Assistant 1, New York State Civil Service examination to be permanently appointed and retain employment. Must have a current Security Guard Photo ID issued by the New York State Department of State to qualify. Candidate must meet physical/ medical requirements and substance abuse screening as determined by the Director of Health Services of the department of Civil Service. A thorough character investigation will be made by University Police. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Must be able to perform mandatory overtime.

Brief Description of Duties: To afford safety and security with duties to include the following:

  • Patrol buildings and facilities to identify, report, and address safety and security concerns. E 15%
  • Greet visitors and staff while verifying credentials. E 15%
  • Respond to facility calls for service, events, and emergencies. E 15%
  • Respond to calls for assistance with difficult clients and visitors. E 10%
  • Assist clients with disabilities, visitors, or employees in all possible ways including escorting them through area. E 15%
  • As directed, assists police and firefighters at the scene of accidents. E 5%
  • Prepare written reports of shift activities including actions taken to report or resolve incidents or problems. E 5%
  • Prevent theft of state or personal property by means of presence and witness. E 5%
  • May operate a motor vehicle to transport people and cargo to emergency situations. E 5%
  • Administer first aid to sick or injured persons. E 5%
  • Other duties as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. NE 5%
